Frequently Asked
Questions

What is a Demat account and why do I need one?

A Demat (dematerialized) account holds your shares, bonds, ETFs and mutual fund units electronically, similar to how a bank account holds money. SEBI mandates one for buying, holding, or selling securities in India.

What documents are needed to open a Demat account?

PAN, Aadhaar (linked to your mobile for e-KYC), a cancelled cheque or bank statement, a passport-size photo, and your signature. Most accounts open fully online within a few hours using e-KYC and in-person/video verification (IPV).

Is there a minimum balance requirement?

No — you can hold a Demat account at zero balance. Charges apply only for account maintenance (AMC), not for keeping it empty.

What's the difference between a Demat account and a Trading account?

The Demat account holds your securities; the Trading account is used to place buy/sell orders. Both are usually opened together and linked to your bank account.

Can I hold more than one Demat account?

Yes, across different brokers/DPs, all linked to the same PAN.

What are the two depositories in India?

NSDL and CDSL. Your broker will be registered as a DP with one or both.

Can I open a Demat account with a broker if I already have one with another broker?

Yes — there’s no restriction on having accounts with multiple brokers simultaneously.

Can I link a Demat account from another broker to a new trading account?

Typically no — a trading account can usually only be linked to a Demat account opened with the same broker/DP. To consolidate holdings, you’d transfer securities from the old Demat account into the new one instead.

What is a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA)?

A low or zero-AMC variant of a regular Demat account for investors whose total holding value stays under a SEBI-defined threshold — useful for those with a modest portfolio who want to cut maintenance costs.

What is DDPI (Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction)?

A digital authorization allowing your broker to debit securities from your Demat account for trade settlement, or to pledge shares as margin collateral — replacing the older physical Power of Attorney. It’s optional.

What is the margin pledge facility, and how do I benefit from it?

It lets you pledge shares already held in your Demat account with your broker to receive additional trading margin, without having to sell those holdings. The broker places a pledge marker on the securities (via CDSL/NSDL) rather than transferring ownership.

What standing instructions/consents does a broker take at account opening?

Typically, a Demat Debit Pledge Instruction (or DDPI), and consent for things like auto-square-off of positions, running account settlement of funds, and electronic contract notes/statements — these are standard authorizations that streamline day-to-day operations.

Can NRIs open a Demat account?

Yes, via a separate NRI Demat account (NRO/NRE linked), usually needing offline/physical verification plus documents like passport, visa/PIO card, and FEMA declarations.

Can Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) open an account?

Yes, but it follows a distinct registration route — FPI accounts require SEBI FPI registration (via a Designated Depository Participant) in addition to standard KYC, and are handled separately from resident/NRI account opening.

Can a minor have a Demat account, and can they trade F&O?

Yes, a minor can have a Demat account (opened and fully operated by a parent/court-appointed guardian, with dual KYC for both), but SEBI rules bar minors from buying shares directly, intraday trading, and F&O — the account can only hold/sell existing securities and invest in mutual funds (including SIPs), since derivatives involve contractual/margin obligations a minor can’t legally undertake.

What is CDSL Easi, and how do I register for it?

CDSL Easi is a free portal from CDSL that lets you view, track, and download your demat holdings directly — including a consolidated statement of holdings and transactions — independent of your broker’s app. To register: go to CDSL’s Easi login page, enter your 16-digit BO ID (your demat account number), then a password made up of your PAN plus your date and month of birth, verify via OTP, and set your own username and password. You can also group multiple demat accounts (if you hold more than one) under a single login. Note that Easi is view-only; its companion service, CDSL Easiest, additionally lets you authorize on-market/off-market transfers of securities online instead of via physical slips
